Three Signs You Need Wound Care —  and How UltraMIST® Can Help

Three Signs You Need Wound Care —  and How UltraMIST® Can Help

Wounds don’t always heal as expected. Whether you have a stubborn sore or a surgical incision that isn’t closing, professional care can mean the difference between a quick recovery and a long-term issue.

At Utah Musculoskeletal Specialists in Salt Lake City, Dan Preece, DPM, Darren Groberg, DPM, and Christian Smith, DPM, specialize in advanced wound care solutions, including UltraMIST® therapy. Here’s how to determine when to call us for professional wound care and how UltraMIST can help you heal.

Why won’t my wound heal? Signs you need wound care

Your body has an amazing ability to heal itself, but it's a complex process. If you find that your wound isn’t healing as expected, one of the following culprits may be to blame:

Infection

Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections interfere with healing and can worsen your symptoms. These infections cause inflammation, delay tissue repair, and increase your risk of complications.

Poor blood circulation

Healing relies on good blood flow for delivering oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells to the wound site. Conditions such as diabetes, peripheral artery disease, and venous insufficiency can reduce blood circulation, hindering the healing process.

Chronic diseases

Underlying health conditions like diabetes, autoimmune disorders, or certain cancers can affect your body’s ability to heal wounds. They can impair your immune system, delay collagen production, or disrupt the normal healing cascade.

Poor nutrition

If you don’t get enough essential nutrients like protein, vitamins (particularly vitamins C and D), and minerals, your body can’t regenerate tissue, and your immunity weakens. Eat a healthy diet to support your body as it heals.

Smoking

Smoking constricts your blood vessels and reduces the oxygen supply to your tissues, hampering healing. It also slows down collagen production and increases the risk of infections.

Medications

Some medications, such as corticosteroids or immunosuppressants, can interfere with your body’s healing ability by suppressing your immune response or affecting the development of new tissues.

What does UltraMIST do?

UltraMIST therapy uses low-frequency, non-contact ultrasound waves that aid and accelerate your body’s natural healing process. The waves penetrate deep below the wound and trigger several conditions that help you heal:

The UltraMIST treatment also uses a fluid mist (like saline) that promotes healing from the inside out without touching the wound.

Unlike standard methods, UltraMIST works at multiple levels, not just on the wound's surface. It speeds up healing while reducing your risk of complications by addressing inflammation and breaking down biofilm, which can hinder recovery.

What does UltraMIST treat?

Our specialists use UltraMIST therapy for a variety of wounds, including chronic, acute, and surgical injuries, such as:

UltraMIST is next-level wound care — we turn to it when traditional methods don’t work. If you have a wound that hasn’t begun to heal after two weeks, and other measures aren’t working, UltraMIST might be the solution.

Does UltraMIST hurt?

No — UltraMIST therapy doesn’t hurt. Because it never touches your skin, there’s no fear of pain. The mist provides a gentle and soothing experience without irritating your wound. Sessions are typically quick, lasting between 3-20 minutes, depending on the wound’s size.

Not only is UltraMIST therapy painless, but its results are quick. Most notice improvement — like less pain and visible healing — after just a few treatments.
