UMS is now pleased to offer an IN OFFICE Extremity MRI at our 430 N 400 W location in Salt Lake City. This open designed magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment provides a quicker, more convenient, and comfortable patient experience than traditional MRI.
Our MRI does not require that your whole body be placed in a tube, only your leg or arm being scanned.
We currently offer MRI scans of the Knee, Ankle and Foot as well as Elbow, Wrist and Hand.
Our cash price is $325, otherwise we are happy to bill your insurance.
We are often able to schedule same day testing with a discussion with your surgeon immediately after the scan, especially for self pay patients not requiring prior authorization from insurance. Results are usually available in 24-48 hours. We do not offer MRI’s with contrast.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is MRI?
MRI is a diagnostic imaging tool that uses a magnetic field and computer-generated radio waves to produce detailed anatomical images. These are helpful to your ordering physician for properly diagnosing and treating your condition. These are typically ordered when the doctor is concerned that enough detail may not be provided from x-ray or ultrasound imaging.
How much does it cost?
Our self pay rate is $325 per scan. Insurance rates vary and your financial responsibility is dependent on coverage details such as copay, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Do I need an order or referal from a doctor?
If you are opting to pay cash for the MRI scan, you do not need a referal, order or Rx from a physician.
Who will interpret my images?
Your ordering physician is trained to interpret your MRI. However, we also contract with a group of radiology providers who will give an official reading of your results.
What if I am claustrophobic?
No problem! Only the limb requiring imaging is placed in the imaging equipment.
What are contraindications for receiving an MRI (reasons you are not a good candidate for this type of imaging)?
There are health problems and implants that are problematic for this type of imaging. Some of those include:
Heart conditions that require a pacemaker
Artificial heart valves
Electronic stimulators
Electronic inner ear implants
Implanted pumps
Metal fragments in eyes
Surgical clips in the head like aneurysm clips
What should I expect at my imaging appointment?
Please wear shorts or a shirt that will not cover the area being scanned. A private changing room and bathroom are available if needed with lockers to protect valuables. Scans normally take 30-45 minutes, during which time you will recline comfortably on a lounge type exam chair. The entire appointment generally takes less than one hour.
